Incoming Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is eager to keep Luka Modric at the club for the 2025–26 season, according to a report published today by MARCA. Alonso has reportedly requested a contract extension for the 39-year-old midfielder, believing Modric’s experience will be a vital asset as he takes charge of the team.
Alonso and Modric were teammates during the 2013–14 and 2014–15 campaigns. Though Modric will turn 40 in September, Alonso sees him as a valuable presence off the bench and a steadying influence in the midfield who could play and be trusted in most situations.
Should Modric agree to stay, Real Madrid may opt against signing another midfielder this summer. With Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Ceballos, Fede Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Arda Güler, and Modric, Alonso would have a deep and versatile midfield corps to work with in his first season in charge.
