Las Blancas lose their captain.

Olga Carmona leaves Real Madrid after 5-year-long run at the club. The white club’s captain leaves after playing 186 games, scoring 28 goals and assisting 22 in such.

Better known as ‘the hero of Spain’ for scoring the winning goal in the Women’s World Cup 2023 final against England, Olga has become the face of her club as well taking the captain’s armband in the summer of 2024 after the departure of Ivana Andrés. This was just one of the moments of how the people of her country received her on pitch after the World Cup:

Olga has always been more offensively driven, and she came to the club by having her offensive abilities in mind, even being listed as one of the attackers in the squad list in the beginning. This virtue of hers gave Madridistas many iconic moments, such as the two goals in the Champions League quarter finals in 2021, one of which shown as the cover image of this article. Carmona was always the preferred penalty taker of the team, always showing courage and cool.

Another unforgettable virtue of hers is definitely her passion for the club and the kind of support she gives the team. That passion could be felt in every single celebration of each and any teammate, with her iconic jump to the formed group hug between her teammates.

Below is the Olga’s full goodbye letter, translated from Spanish:

Hello Madridistas, I never thought this day would come, the day to say goodbye to Real Madrid. I remember perfectly when I was 20 years old and received the most exciting call of my career. A call that made me make the decision that has changed absolutely everything. I had to leave Sevilla, leave my city, my home, the club of my life, to face the most important change of my career. A change that has made me evolve, grow, and go from that girl who always dreamed of it to the footballer who, over these five years, has managed to live it.

I perfectly remember my first day at the club, the first time I wore this shirt, my first training session, my first official match and my first Champions League match, my first goal, my first captaincy, and the excitement of being part of the growth of this club that began to write this history also in women’s football.

Thank you. You made me fulfill a dream and gave me the opportunity to wear this shirt, and during this time I have managed to fulfill another imaginable one: becoming the captain of the club of my life. It has been an honor for me to defend you every day, every weekend, and every game in every competition, in the good times, and even more so in the not-so-good ones.

It has been five incredible, unique, and unforgettable years. Today, after making the most difficult decision of my career, it’s time to say goodbye. It was a well-thought-out decision, and although I know not everyone will understand, I feel it’s time for our paths to part ways. I only hope I’ve shown you on the field everything I feel this club and you Real Madrid fans mean to me. I assure you that I’ve worked every day to make that happen. Thank you to all those who have believed in me, to you, the president, and to you Ana and Begoña for trusting me and giving me the opportunity to fulfill a dream, to Alberto and David, the rest of the staff, and all the club’s employees. To you, the fans, for supporting us and cheering us on in every game, on every field, and at every moment. And above all, to you, my teammates, who have been my greatest supporters over these five years.

I was born a Madridista, I am a Madridista, and I will always be a Madridista. Hala Madrid always.
