On the eve of AFC Bournemouth’s Premier League fixture against Manchester City, manager Andoni Iraola addressed the media, offering reflections on defender Dean Huijsen’s move to Real Madrid.
“Obviously, from my point of view, you never want to lose this type of player because he’s been so good for us,” Iraola remarked. “But there’s also a part where you feel happy for him, because he’s going to Real Madrid. I think that’s what he really wanted to do. And obviously, we hope everything goes well for him after these two games.”
Huijsen has been instrumental in Bournemouth’s defense this season, making 30 Premier League appearances and contributing three goals. His performances have not only solidified the Cherries’ backline but also attracted attention from top European clubs. Ultimately, Real Madrid secured his signature, and Huijsen, a Real Madrid fan, is now in dreamland.
Iraola praised Huijsen’s professionalism during the transition, stating, “I think it’s been quite natural (the way he’s handled the end of his contract). He hasn’t missed any training sessions. Everyone, I think, has also acted naturally. And obviously, for the club, there was a possibility that this could happen. And it also gives the club time now in the transfer market to prepare for next season.”
Huijsen’s move to Real Madrid marks a significant step in his career. Having previously developed in the youth systems of Málaga and Juventus, and gaining experience on loan at Roma, he has demonstrated maturity and composure beyond his years. His admiration for Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos and the opportunity to work under new manager Xabi Alonso were influential factors in his decision to join the Spanish giants.
