Gonzalo García to stay, wear number 9 for Real Madrid -report

Real Madrid have reportedly made a definitive decision regarding the future of promising academy product Gonzalo García, who will remain with the first team for the 2025–26 season. According to Onda Cero, the 21-year-old forward has earned his place after a standout showing in the FIFA Club World Cup earlier this summer, and he is set to wear the number 9 jersey.

Gonzalo’s rise has been one of the more surprising developments of Madrid’s preseason, especially given the club’s depth in the attacking line. While there had been internal debate about whether to promote him or integrate Endrick right away, it now appears that both players will stay. Still, with stars like Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Jude Bellingham, and wonderkid Franco Mastantuono ahead of them in the pecking order, minutes could be scarce for the young forwards.

Even so, Madrid value Gonzalo’s unique profile. Unlike his more versatile or creative attacking teammates, Gonzalo plays as a classic center-forward — a physical presence in the box capable of finishing crosses and holding up play. His role may mirror that of Joselu Mato during the 2023–24 campaign, where the veteran striker contributed in crucial moments despite limited starts.

Gonzalo’s youth and relative inexperience might prevent him from having an immediate impact, but Madrid’s demanding calendar — which includes La Liga, the Champions League, and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup — will likely provide opportunities. The club sees his presence as a long-term investment, both as a potential game-changer off the bench and a homegrown talent capable of growing into a consistent contributor at the highest level.
