The defender spoke to Diario AS ahead of the Nations League semifinal against France

Dean Huijsen recently revealed his initial conversations with Xabi Alonso following his transfer to Real Madrid, emphasizing Alonso’s tactical priorities. Speaking to Diario AS, Huijsen shared, “We’ve talked a bit about the team, his vision, and the project. Clearly, we want to start winning again, and we’re confident we will. I think I’m a defender who’s comfortable on the ball, and Xabi wants me to help the team in build-up play.”

The former Bournemouth defender’s €58 million move came ahead of schedule, a reality Huijsen humbly admits he’s still adjusting to. “I’m grateful to everyone who made this happen—Florentino, the sporting directors, and everyone involved. I’m delighted,” he stated from Spain’s training camp at Las Rozas.

Huijsen is among Luis de la Fuente’s selections at center-back for Spain’s upcoming Nations League fixtures, competing alongside Vivian, Cubarss, and Le Normand. Inspired heavily by Sergio Ramos, Huijsen praised the legendary defender’s versatility: “He had everything—leadership, goals, personality, and character. That’s why he’s my idol.”

Currently, Huijsen is focused on Spain’s upcoming semifinal against France, keen on making an immediate impact for club and country.
